Jože Krašovec, President of the IOSOT 2004-2007
Jože Krašovec was born on 20 April 1944 in Sodna vas near Podčetrtek,
Slovenia. He studied theology at the Theological Faculty in Ljubljana
(1963-1970) and at the Ecole Biblique et Archéologique Française
in Jerusalem. In 1976 he was awarded a Doctorate in Biblical Studies
from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome; in 1982 he completed
a Doctorate in Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In 1986 he earned a combined Doctorate at the Sorbonne in Paris
– in the History of Religion and Religious Anthropology (Sorbonne),
and in Theological Studies (Institut Catholique). All three dissertations
have been published: 1. Der Merismus im Biblisch-Hebräischen und
Nordwestsemitischen (BibOr 33; Rome: Biblical Institute Press 1977);
2. Antithetic Structure in Biblical Hebrew Poetry (VT.S 35; Leiden:
E. J. Brill, 1984); 3. La justice (sdq) de Dieu dans la Bible hébraique
et l'interprétation juive et chrétienne (OBO 76; Freiburg, Switzerland:
Universitätsverlag; Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 1988).
He began lecturing in Biblical studies at the Theological Faculty
in Ljubljana in 1976, and has been a Full Professor since 1992.
On 30 May 1991 he was elected an Adjunct, and on 6 June 1995 a Full
Member of the Slovenian Academy of Arts and Sciences. His bibliography
comprises about 300 monographic studies and articles published in
Slovene, English, German, French as well as various other languages.
His most comprehensive projects are the proceedings Interpretation
of the Bible (Ljubljana / Sheffield, 1998) and Reward, Punishment,
and Forgiveness (VT.Sup 78; Leiden / Boston / Köln: E. J. Brill,
1999). For Slovenia the most important work carried out under his
supervision is the new Slovenian translation of the Bible: the Slovenian
Standard Version (1996). On 6 August 2004 he was elected (at the
world congress at Leiden, Netherlands) President of IOSOT for the
years 2004-2007.
Professor Joseph Plevnik, Secretary of the IOSOT Congress
2007
Joseph Plevnik was born on 18 December 1928 in Ljubljana. College
and University studies were carried out in Canada and in Germany:
St. Mary’s university, Halifax (1949-1948); Ignatius College, Guelph
(1952-1954); Collegium Christi Regis, Toronto (1954-1957); Loyola
and Immaculate Conception Colleges, Montreal (1956-1957); Boston
College (M.A. 1963); University of Würzburg, Germany (PhD 1971).
Professional activities in the field of Sacred Scriptures at Regis
College, Toronto: Assistant professor (1971-1978), Associate Professor
(1978-1989), Full Professor (1989-), Advanced Degree Director (1982-1991);
Professor Emeritus (1994-). Professor Plevnik is member of the Catholic
Biblical Association of America, of the Society of Biblical Literature,
of the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies, of the Editorial board
of the scholarly journal Bogoslovni vestnik (Ljubljana, 1996-).
He has delivered scholarly papers in various seminars. His publications
include many scholarly papers in refereed journals and a few monographic
works in English and in Slovene languages.
